History of The Partnership
Purpose Statement
The Partnership is a network of diverse public interest organizations. We collaborate to build and share knowledge that challenges and influences thinking and decision making within our own organizations to advance responsible gambling, support sustainable growth and encourage safer play.
Core Values
A collaborative partnership: Members work together and share perspectives and information to build knowledge that supports common understanding and collectively pushes boundaries.
Diversity of voices: Members value a national diversity of voices and will cultivate broad and balanced membership and participation.
Open discussion: Members focus on open dialogue where there is respect for different perspectives and where members are able to trust each other and set aside the “official” perspectives and personal views.
Leadership & adding value: Members demonstrate leadership by participating in discussions with a view to always adding value and enhancing their collective understanding.
2018
Over the previous eight years under a very successful vision and core values, and with the continuing commitment to The Digest and the establishment of the Symposium, there were substantive changes happening both inside member organizations and RG stakeholder organizations across the country. New organizations with evolved mandates saw the sector moving further along the continuum from preventing problem gambling to promoting responsible gambling and increasingly to a safe or positive play focus for all player risk segments. Once again, the Partners recognized the need to formally reflect and make decisions on the future direction of the group. The members undertook a guided strategic review to assess the value and utility of CPRG to the members and the sector more generally, and what the next five years should look like in terms of purpose, focus and activities.
After much discussion and deliberation, the CPRG name was changed to The Partnership and a new Purpose Statement written. Member activities would focus on professional development and include a bi-annual Symposium as well as a bi-annual Think Tank.
2012
Ten years on, it had become apparent that the responsible gambling sector in Canada had matured considerably and the needs and capacities of the sector had changed. In 2012 the CPRG undertook a strategic review that saw members committed to promoting a national dialogue on effective and innovative responsible gambling policies, program design, and leading practices to help reduce the risk of problem gambling. In support of that commitment, CPRG would provide members with an environment where they could:
--share knowledge, information, and experiences,
--explore challenges facing the sector,
--anticipate future challenges, and
--provide learning and development opportunities for member organization staff and organizations.
Discussions among the Partners would focus on substantive, comprehensive exploration and dialogue on relevant issues with a strong emphasis on pragmatic solutions. The CPRG developed a set of core values intended to provide guidance to members in terms of how they interact and engage in that dialogue.
2001
The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) sponsored a national forum that brought together a group of Canadians to identify issues and actions to further the aims of responsible gambling in Canada. As a result of that meeting and under the leadership of RGC, a diverse group of representatives from several provinces established a founding steering committee and pursued the creation of a national member-driven initiative to provide services to members in support of responsible gambling research, education and policy development. The steering committee translated this vision into a formal initiative – the Canadian Partnership for Responsible Gambling (CPRG). CPRG’s original mandate was very broad and the members engaged in a wide range of activities that included research, information sharing, collecting and analyzing information about common practices, and discussion on issues of common interest.
